Orthograft, Inc. (Orthograft, 2015)
The Orthograft team developed non-collagenous proteins (NCPs) that can be used in the self-healing of bone matrix, through their action on bone mineral. Studies conducted under the NSF award to the PI confirmed the possibility, and his doctoral student chose to pursue this as his startup company. Their biomaterials utilize a structural mechanism through which bone growth is achieved, decreasing the reliance on the chemical stimulation seen in current products. Orthograft was selected as a finalist in the Massachusetts Medical Device Development Center (M2D2) in 2014 as part of the New Venture Competition. As Team 389 in NSF I-Corps, the team employed customer discovery and customer development techniques used in Lean LaunchPad to determine a “Go” decision.
